Lawrenceville – Rider University freshman biology major Angela Shockley of Sicklerville has been named the first recipient of the Maurice E. Palmer Memorial Scholarship at Rider University.
Each year the $5,000 four-year scholarship will be awarded to a deserving incoming freshman enrolled in Rider’s Educational Opportunity Program (EOP).
“Angela symbolizes the spirit of what Maurice was all about,” said Rubin Joyner, director of Rider’s EOP. “Maurice continually went beyond the call of duty.” “He was about student recruitment, retention, and graduation. His goal was always to help students stand out as career success stories.
Recipients must demonstrate leadership skills, have a commitment and loyalty to working with others and the ability to contribute to Rider to make it a better place. Those selected must also have obtained a minimum 2.5 grade point average. Palmer was an associate director of admission at Rider. He was responsible for recruiting minority students and students for Rider’s EOP. Rider was an integral part of his life. He passed away in 2005 at age 39.
“I feel very honored and blessed to have received this scholarship,” said Shockley. “I am thankful. The whole experience is overwhelming, especially having met Mr. Palmer’s family and loved ones. He left a wonderful legacy.”
Shockley plans to attend medical school to become a pediatrician. Prior to coming to Rider, she received an Academic Achievement Award in Italian from her alma mater, Winslow Township High School, for having the highest average in Italian for four years in her graduating class; awards for field hockey at the JV and Varsity level and lacrosse at the Varsity level; and an Outstanding Member Award from the African American Cultural Club.
