September 19, 2006 -- Rider to Host Alcohol Responsibility Week

LAWRENCEVILLE – Rider University will use Alcohol Responsibility Week (September 25 - 29) to continue its effort to promote good judgment when consuming alcohol.

“Sober is Sexy,” is the theme this year.  Events will take place that will enable students to learn about the effects of alcohol and drugs.  PHOCUS (Peer Health on Campus Unites Students), the student health education group; Greek Life, the Residence Life Office, Counseling Services, and other groups across campus will lead the events.  The goal is to show students there are ways to have fun without alcohol being involved.

“We really want to combat the images about alcohol and to show that it isn’t needed to have fun or hook up,” said Jamiyl Mosley, area director for residence Life and a Rider alumnus.

Student can attend the kick off in Daly’s dining hall on Monday, September 25 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.  T-shirts and fact sheets will be handed out.  Students are also encouraged to make a pledge of abstinence or responsibility.  The Rider Bronc will hug and kiss all those who make pledges.

Other events include a program run by PHOCUS on Tuesday, September 26 in Olson Hall, a trivia contest in the Pub on Wednesday, September 27 as well as at the J-spot at 10 p.m.  The week will culminate on September 29 with the Bronc Blow-out in the Pub.

“We want to highlight responsible use of alcohol,” said Mosley.  “We’re really hoping that the theme ‘Sober is Sexy’ will really stick with people.”
