MAY 1, 1997- SUMUTKA RECEIVES 1997 RIDER INNOVATIVE TEACHING AWARD

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ -- Dr. Alan R. Sumutka, associate professor of accounting at Rider University, recently received the 1997 Innovative Teaching Award presented by the College of Business Administration's (CBA) Business Advisory Board. The award is given annually to a CBA instructor who implements new and creative teaching strategies in the classroom.

Dr. Sumutka, a resident of Mercerville, NJ, was honored for "Using the Internet as a Focal Point to Integrate Computer Skills into a Tax Course," an approach used in his Fundamentals of Federal Taxation class. It is the first non-computer science course at Rider that attempts to enhance students' computer skills in a continuous, comprehensive manner using the World Wide Web as the basis for out-of-class instruction.

Rider University is an independent, coeducational, nonsectarian institution with a 353-acre campus in Lawrenceville, NJ, and a 23-acre campus in Princeton, NJ. The University offers 57 undergraduate programs and 15 graduate programs in business, liberal arts, science, education, and music. Ninety-five percent of Rider's faculty members hold doctorate or other appropriate advanced degrees. U.S. News and World Report has again ranked Rider in the top tier of northern universities based on the quality of its programs.
