MAY 9, 1997- KLATSKIN NAMED FIRST RECIPIENT OF WILSON STURDEVANT MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP
LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ -- Susan Klatskin (right) of Cranbury has been named the first recipient of the Wilson Sturdevant Music Scholarship for Band Students at Rider University.
The scholarship, established in August, 1996 by the Kiwanis Club Charitable Foundation in memory of Wilson Sturdevant, was created to support and encourage musically gifted students at the University who are members of the Rider Concert Band. The initial gift of $500 by the Trenton Kiwanis Club will be repeated annually to fund the scholarship.
"Susan was a clear choice," said Dr. Jerry Rife (left), professor of fine arts, who cited contributions to the band and leadership as important guidelines in the selection process. "She displays an ongoing committment and love of music. She can hold down solos, and she's a good student."
Wilson Sturdevant's widow, Hilda (center), was on hand for the presentation of the award.
Klatskin, a senior majoring in biology, is currently clarinet first chair in the Rider Concert Band. She has also been honored with Rider's John Philip Sousa Award for outstanding contribution to the band.
