MAY 6, 1997- RIDER HOSTS FOREIGN LANGUAGE FORENSIC TOURNAMENT FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ -- More than 1,500 students representing 72 high schools from New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware will attend the 19th annual Foreign Language Forensic Tournament at Rider University on Wednesday, May 14, 1997.

Sponsored by Rider's Department of Foreign Languages and Literature, the tournament features competition throughout the day in Spanish, French, German, Italian, and Russian on both the intermediate and advanced levels. Nearly 35,000 students have participated in the event since its inception in 1979.

Competition includes recitation of original or published works, performance of original skits, dramatic interpretation, extemporaneous speaking. The popular "college bowl" competition will also be held in each language.

Some 150 high school teachers, who will accompany their students, will serve as judges along with members of Rider's foreign languages faculty.

Registration for the tournament will be held from 8 to 9 a.m. in Alumni Gymnasium, immediately followed by the opening reception.

The first session of competition will be from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. in classroom buildings throughout Rider's Lawrenceville campus. The second session will run from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m, followed by a teachers' luncheon in Daly Dining Hall and a students' picnic on the Campus Green outside the Student Center.

The closing session for presentation of awards to individual winners and the three schools with the most events won will begin at 2 p.m. in Alumni Gymnasium.

When not competing, students may take advantage of the University's recreational facilities, including tennis courts, outdoor basketball courts, pool, and fitness course. The Art Gallery and University Store will also be open, and foreign language films will be shown throughout the day.

Rider University's Lawrenceville campus is located five miles south of Princeton and three miles north of Trenton on Route 206 in Lawrence Township, NJ. The campus is one-half mile south of exit 7A of Interstate 95.
