APRIL 24, 1997- WESTMINSTER JUBILEE SINGERS TO PERFORM AT PRESIDENTS' SUMMIT IN PHILADELPHIA
PRINCETON, NJ -- The Jubilee Singers from Westminster Choir College of Rider University will take part in the Sunday evening "Taste of Philadelphia" entertainment portion of the historic Presidents' Summit for America's Future planned for April 27-29 at the new Pennsylvania Convention Center.
The 2-hour and 15 minute program will begin at 5 p.m., and is designed to convey the sights, sounds, and spirit of the Delaware Valley to a nationwide assembly of more than 4,000 delegates attending the Philadelphia conference.
The Jubilee Singers will be joined by the Bright Hope Baptist Church Celestial Choir and the Cheyney University of Pennsylvania Concert Choir in providing accompaniment for world-renowned vocalist Melba Moore. The united voices of the three choirs will be directed by J. Donald Dumpson, a member of the sacred music faculty at Westminster Choir College of Rider University. Also performing will be the Tri State Mass Choir.
The Jubilee Singers is a multicultural, multiracial, and interdenominational choral ensemble with a diverse repertoire. Its literature includes African-American spirituals and folk songs, classical music by African-American composers, African chants and dances, and gospel music and secular songs by musical greats. The group also explores and performs selected works by non-African-American composers who have composed or arranged music of the African-American experience.
The President's Summit for America's Future is intended to be a celebration and reinforcement of the nation's heritage of volunteer citizen service. The summit will have three focal points: first, current and former U.S. presidents and first ladies will make a call to commitment and action for volunteerism; second, other national, state, and local leaders from all sectors will announce their organizational commitments to action; and third, delegates from approximately 100 communities and all 50 states will work together to turn the message of the summit into concrete plans for action.
Westminster Choir College of Rider University is located on a 23-acre campus in Princeton, NJ. The College offers undergraduate and graduate programs designed to prepare students for music leadership and careers in churches, schools, and communities.
