APRIL 9, 1997- CENTER FOR READING AND WRITING ACCEPTING REGISTRATIONS FOR SUMMER PROGRAM

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ -- The Rider University Center for Reading and Writing, directed by Rider's renowned reading expert Dr. Susan Mandel Glazer, is now accepting registrations for its Summer 1997 Instructional Program.

Children ranging from ages six to 16 are eligible for the program. Participating students will attend the Center on Rider's Lawrenceville campus three mornings a week from 8:45 to 11:45 a.m. for a total of four weeks, beginning on July 7 and ending on July 30.

The program helps to increase reading comprehension skills using literature and content areas of each student's choice. Gifted, average, and learners with special needs are eligible to attend. High achieving readers will use a variety of approaches developed to increase problem-solving abilities in reading and writing; average-learning children will also learn problem-solving strategies appropriate for them to guide comprehension and writing skills; students with special needs will learn those same strategies "good readers" use for effective communication.

Students in the program will be placed into groups of six to eight. Placement will be based on children's age and interest. Each student will have an individual curriculum and instruction sessions, and will also work with other students in order to share their creative writing and learn how to become a more effective learner.

Most students will work in a computer laboratory on campus, using word processing programs to write and educational programs to increase reading and memory skills. Videotaped recordings of students working with teachers will be viewed throughout the program by the professional administrative staff, enabling them to alter children's curriculum to meet each one's needs most effectively.

More than 3600 children have attended the program since its inception in 1980. For more information and to obtain application forms, contact Gail Turner weekdays at (609) 896-5313.
