MARCH 3, 1997- SATIRIC COMEDIENNE TO EXAMINE SOCIAL ISSUES IN PROGRAM AT RIDER UNIVERSITY

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ -- Judith Sloan, a renowned comedic performer and lecturer, will present a program titled, "Ethics and Politics in Performance," on Thursday, April 3, 1997 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Rider University's Lawrenceville campus. The presentation is free and open to the public.

Sloan's work has been produced in theaters, festivals, and on radio throughout the United States and around the world. In the tradition of Lily Tomlin and Whoopi Goldberg, she creates lively comic monologues and stage characters from "real life" people and drama. Through the sketches of these characters, she is able to challenge common assumptions about war and peace, women, generational relationships, the ties that bind friends and family, and other social issues.

In addition to performing, Sloan currently teaches oral history and performance at New York University's Gallatin Division. She is a frequent guest lecturer, and her full-length solo works have been supported by numerous foundations, including the National Endowment for the Humanities, The Puffin Foundation, The Funding Exchange, the Connecticut Commission on the Arts, and the Cowan Foundation.

At Rider, Sloan will perform excerpts from several of her shows and discuss the ethical issues that arise in the use of oral history. The program will be of special interest to students and professionals in the fields of history, theater, communications, sociology, and philosophy.

The presentation will be held in Rider's College of Business Administration auditorium. For more information, contact Dr. Lise Vogel, director of the Race, Class, Gender, and Ethnicity Project, at (609) 895-5463.

Rider University's Lawrenceville campus is located five miles south of Princeton and three miles north of Trenton on Route 206 in Lawrence Township, NJ. The campus is one-half mile south of exit 7A of Interstate 95.
