JUNE 16, 1998- RIDER UNIVERSITY'S BOARD OF TRUSTEES ANNOUNCES NEW MEMBERS, OFFICERS
LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ -- At their most recent meeting on June 4, Rider University's Board of Trustees made appointments to key leadership posts and introduced three new members to the University's governing body.
Chair: Joan C. Mazzotti
The most noteworthy appointment was that of Haverford, PA resident Joan C. Mazzotti (left), associate general counsel and assistant secretary of the ARAMARK Corporation of Philadelphia, who was elected chair of the board.
Holder of a B.A. in political science from Rider in 1972 and a member of the Board of Trustees since 1996, Mazzotti has been associated with ARAMARK for 21 years and currently manages the legal services for their global food and support services group, a $4 billion operating division of the corporation. A world leader in managed services, ARAMARK has more than 140,000 employees serving 15 million people and 500,000 locations in 11 countries every day.
In addition to her term on the Board of Trustees, Mazzotti has contributed a great deal to the University. She has helped secure more than $30,000 in gifts from ARAMARK in support of the Annual Fund Alumnae Challenge (which raised over $150,000 in new gifts to the institution from women), the Orienting Women Leaders (OWL) program, the Student Leadership Development Conference, and the College of Business Administration's venture into experiential learning -- CREW. Mazzotti also dedicated much time and energy to the creation of OWL, a program aimed at developing career and leadership skills in female students at Rider, and served as the chair of Rider's Annual Fund in 1995 and 1996.
In the community, Mazzotti is on the board of directors of the Support Center for Child Advocates, which provides free legal services to abused and neglected children in Philadelphia. She also serves on the leadership council of Women's Way, a funding federation for agencies providing services to women.
Mazzotti received a J.D. from Villanova University in 1975. She is a member of the American, Pennsylvania, and Philadelphia Bar Associations.
Vice Chair: Dr. James E. Carnes
Pennington resident Dr. James E. Carnes, president and chief executive officer of the David Sarnoff Research Center in Princeton, was re-elected vice chairperson of the board.
A member of the Board of Trustees since 1993 and its vice chair since 1996, Dr. Carnes became Sarnoff's president in 1990 after 27 years of combined service with Sarnoff and its predecessor RCA. A recognized authority in the field of charge-coupled devices, he has played a major role in the development of high definition television (HDTV) in the US since 1987.
Dr. Carnes has been issued nine US patents and is the author of more than 100 papers and presentations. He received a B.S. degree in engineering science from The Pennsylvania State University in 1961 and a Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from Princeton University.
The David Sarnoff Research Center today conducts industry and government-supported electronics research in areas such as HDTV, interactive multimedia, digital video over satellite and cable, flat panel displays, solid state lasers, and infrared imaging systems.
Secretary: Dr. Barbara Anderson
Trenton resident Dr. Barbara Anderson, assistant commissioner of the New Jersey State Division of Student Services, was re-elected secretary of the board.
A member of the Board of Trustees since 1992 and its secretary since 1996, Dr. Anderson's career in education spans more than 25 years, during which she has served as a teacher, assistant principal, and assistant superintendent. Prior to joining the State Division of Student Services, she served five years as the superintendent of schools in Mercer County from 1989-94, providing leadership and direction for the 11 school districts and 44,000 students in the county.
Among her many awards, Dr. Anderson earned a White House Fellowship to serve as a special assistant to the US Secretary of Labor for one year in Washington, DC. She has won education awards from the Northeast Coalition of Educational Leaders, NAACP, and the Trenton Branch Freedom Fund, as well as an excellence award from the New Jersey Association of Professional Women.
Her service affiliations include the International School Services board of directors, the Granville Academy advisory board, and Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority.
Dr. Anderson received a B.S. in government from Howard University in 1966, an MA in guidance and counseling/personnel from Kean College in 1970, and a D.Ed. in educational administration from Columbia University in 1991.
New Members: Dr. Harry T. Gamble, Paul J. Lang, Donald R. Richards
Dr. Harry T. Gamble, retired coordinator of football operations and club relations for the National Football League (NFL), Paul J. Lang, vice president of the policyholder department at Prudential Insurance Company of America, and Donald R. Richards, senior managing partner in the Metro Park office of the accounting firm Ernst & Young L.L.P, all accepted an invitations to become members of the board.
Gamble, a 1952 Rider alumnus with a B.S. in business administration, previously sat on the Board for ten years from 1987-97. A resident of Haddonfield, he holds M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Temple University, and received an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Rider in 1987.
Prior to his retirement from the NFL last June, Gamble served as liaison between the 30 professional football clubs and the NFL officiating department. He was also involved in matters concerning the competition committee, collegiate scouting, the World League, and youth football development.
He is perhaps best known in the Delaware Valley for his involvement with the Philadelphia Eagles from 1981-1995, where he held a variety of positions including assistant coach, administrative assistant, and general manager before becoming the organization's president and chief operating officer in 1992.
Gamble's career exploits have earned him numerous community citations, including induction into the Gloucester County Sports Hall of Fame, the Rider University Athletic Hall of Fame, and the South Jersey Coaches Hall of Fame. He has also received the Bert Bell Award, the Distinguished Citizen of 1990 Award presented by the South Jersey Council of the Boy Scouts, the Man of the Year Award by the Archdiocese of Philadelphia's Catholic Youth Organization, the 1993 Pro Sports Executive of the Year Award by the New Jersey Sportswriters Association, and the Outstanding Alumni Brother Award presented by Delta Sigma Pi professional business fraternity.
Gamble is a member of the Camden County American Red Cross and the Association for Retarded Children, and is on the board of directors of the Kennedy Hospital Health Care Foundation and the Brooks Irvine Football Club. He is also active in the Special Olympics and the Police Athletic League.
Lang, a 1968 Rider alumnus with a B.S. in business administration and current member of Rider's Business Advisory Board, is a first-time University Trustee. A resident of Berkeley Heights, he also received an M.S. degree in management from American College in 1986.
The 1994 recipient of the Rider University Life Achievement Award for the College of Business Administration, Lang joined Prudential in 1973 after five years of service in the United States Air Force. He moved through the ranks to vice president, and in 1994 joined Pru Preferred to work with the team addressing policy owner communications and compliance. This project is aimed at improving the methods and modes of communication with all of Prudential's individual insurance policy owners in addition to seeking tools to enhance the quality and value of information provided to the customers.
Richards, a 1970 Rider alumnus with a B.S. in accounting and the chair of Rider's Accounting Advisory Council, is a first-time University Trustee.
Richards, a resident of East Brunswick, recently played an instrumental role in the establishment of the Ernst & Young Resource Center in Rider's College of Business Administration. Through the generosity of the firm, a model accounting office was created that blends modern technology with a professional tax reference library. The center puts Rider undergraduate and graduate accounting students ahead of the industry in terms of using programs that allow them to conduct tax research in a most timely fashion, while having hard copy reference material nearby.
The 1996 recipient of the Rider University Life Achievement Award for the College of Business Administration, Richards has more than 27 years experience in the field of public accounting. He is a member and past president of the New Jersey Society of Certified Public Accountants, representing the interests of 14,000 CPA's throughout the state, and has been a member of the governing council of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. In addition to chairing Rider's Accounting Advisory Board, Richards is also a member of the University's Business Advisory Board.
Rider University is an independent, coeducational, nonsectarian institution with a 353-acre main campus in Lawrenceville, New Jersey and a 23-acre campus in Princeton, New Jersey. The University offers 58 undergraduate programs and 17 graduate programs in the Colleges of Business Administration; Liberal Arts, Education, and Sciences; Continuing Studies; and Westminster Choir College.
