MARCH 6, 1998- POQUELIN PLAYERS HIGHLIGHT 16th ANNUAL WOMEN'S STUDIES COLLOQUIUM

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ -- In a departure from previous formats, Rider University will feature a dramatic reading by Princeton's Poquelin Players of "Goblin Market" as the centerpiece to the 16th annual Women's Studies Colloquium on Thursday, March 26 on the University's Lawrenceville campus.

The reading, which will substitute for the keynote lecture session included in past colloquia, delves into adolescent sensuality among two Victorian sisters who are tempted by the luscious fruits of seductive goblins. The play, originally written by Polly Pen and Peggy Harmon, was adapted for stage by Christina Rossetti.

The 8 p.m. reading will conclude a full-day of activities, including the presentation of top student papers dealing with an area of women's studies as well as the bestowal of the Sadie Ziegler-Bernice Gee Woman of the Year Award for 1998.

The reading of student essays will be held from 1 to 4:30 p.m. in room 245 of the Student Center. The papers were written in several English, history, literature, and women's studies courses at Rider, and 40 were recommended by faculty for consideration to be presented. The selected essays were anonymously entered, and a panel of faculty judges selected the 10 best papers for presentation.

"These papers were judged on their excellence in research writing," said Dr. Judith Johnston, professor of English and coordinator of this year's colloquium. "The colloquium is an opportunity for the students to present their research and gain experience in responding to questions on their papers."

Dr. Margaret Schleissner, associate professor of German, organized the panel of judges. She worked as chair of the selection committee.

"I think that the papers were very good," said Dr. Schleissner. "It was very exciting to be involved in the judging. It makes you proud to be part of Rider when you see such excellent work being done."
