LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ -- Abby Smith, a sophomore from Sugarloaf, PA, has been named the recipient of the Gary A. Carskaddan History Prize. The award is presented twice a year to the Rider University history major with the highest grade point average in history courses during the previous semester.
Smith's extra-curricular activities on campus include the History Club, the French Club, and Alpha Lambda Delta Honors Fraternity. She is a member of the cross country and track and field teams, and was named Rider's athlete of the month last September. She is also a peer tutor.
"The history and the French departments are excellent," said Smith. "The professors are always there to talk to you and are always willing to help."
As part of the award, Smith will have her name added to the Carskaddan plaque display in the history department. She will also receive a gift certificate from the Rider University Store.
Gary A. Carskaddan is a 1985 graduate who has funded the history prize for several years. He is currently a student life administrator at Holy Cross College in Worcester, MA.
