NOVEMBER 18, 1998- CELEBRATION OF LIGHTS OBSERVES DIVERSITY OF HOLIDAY TRADITIONS
LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ -- Continuing with a Rider University holiday tradition, the sixth annual Celebration of Lights will once again bring together students, faculty, and administrators from the University's Lawrenceville and Westminster campuses in a multicultural observance of the holiday season.
Annually held at the start of the holiday season, the Celebration of Lights provides an opportunity for the campus community to learn about the unique late-year holidays observed by an array cultures. This year's celebration will take place on Thursday, December 3, at 4 p.m. in the Student Center Cavalla Room.
Five holiday stations -- Chanukah, Christmas, Diwali, Kwanzaa, and Three Kings Day -- will include students from various student organizations on campus sharing holiday traditions, food, music, prayers, and stories in a festive display of Rider's diversity. The Posada, a Latin American community holiday tradition, will tie the stations together with a musical procession led by Rider students.
Pennington resident Dr. William Guthrie, professor of undergraduate education, will again begin the ceremony with native American stories and his use of natural means to create the fire used to light Rider's unity candle. This flame will then light several other candles in the celebration centerpiece.
The celebration is free and open to the public.
Rider University's Lawrenceville campus is located five miles south of Princeton and three miles north of Trenton on Route 206 in Lawrence Township, NJ. The campus is one-half mile south of exit 7A of Interstate 95.
