LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ -- The Rider University department of athletics will induct four new members to its Hall of Fame on Saturday, February 6, 1999, director of athletics Curt Blake announced.
The eighth class of inductees to Rider's Hall of Fame include soccer/basketball player Ed Adams of Trenton, former head swimming coach Rich Coppola of Morrisville, PA, softball/field hockey player Terry Gillespie Dossick of Feasterville, PA, baseball player Olimpio Pacchioli of Martins Creek, PA, and basketball player Darrick Suber of Upper Darby, PA.
The five inductees this year brings the total of Rider Hall of Fame members to 38 since its inception in 1990.
Adams was an All-American goalkeeper in 1956, compiling four shutouts for the 6-2 team. A 1957 Rider graduate, he made 37 saves in one game against national power Army, a Rider record that still stands. He also earned All-East honors in 1955, leading that squad to a 5-1-1 record.
Coppola revived the swimming program at Rider in 1968, and founded the women's varsity team in 1985. Honored by the College Swimming Coaches of America as a recipient of the Masters Coach Award, his last eight women's teams were honored on the national level for academic excellence. In 1997, the Rider swimming pool was dedicated as the Coppola Pool.
Dossick, a 1991 Rider graduate, was an All-Conference selection four consecutive years in softball, twice earning All-East honors and having her name appear on the All-America ballot. The starting centerfielder on three consecutive conference championship teams, she graduated as the Rider career leader in hits and runs batted in. She still holds the Rider record for career batting average at .373. In field hockey, she led the Broncs in scoring as a junior.
Pacchioli was the first great baseball player at Rider, graduating as the career leader in hits and RBI. A 1951 Rider graduate, he was the first Broncs player to collect 100 career hits, and also set Rider marks in triples. Today he is one of Rider athletics' top supporters, usually arriving at contests with a large entourage of friends and family.
Suber, a 1993 Rider graduate, led the Rider basketball team to the conference championship and NCAA Championship tournament, graduating as the career-scoring leader. The only Bronc to ever compile 2,000 career points, Suber was the Player of the Year in the Northeast Conference, and was the MVP of the championship tournament in both the East Coast Conference and a year later in the NEC.
The day's events will begin with a Rider's women's basketball game vs. Loyola at 2 p.m., followed by an awards banquet and induction ceremony in the Student Center Cavalla Room at 4 p.m. After the banquet, the Rider men's basketball team will face Fairfield at 7:30 p.m. The new inductees will be introduced during halftime of the men's game.
