March 26, 1999- RIDER UNIVERSITY ANNOUNCES SPRING LUNCH BOX LECTURE SERIES

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ -- Rider University's College of Continuing Studies will again present a series of lectures by several of the University's outstanding faculty members and administration. Each lecture in the Lunch Box series will feature a different topic and will provide the audience with some stimulating "food for thought."

All four Wednesday lectures, which are free and open to the public, will be held in the Student Center Fireside Lounge on the University's Lawrenceville campus. The lectures begin at noon and continue through 1 p.m., except for the two-hour April 28 lecture which will conclude at 2 p.m. Audience members are invited to bring a lunch; coffee and tea will be provided. The lecture schedule includes:

Where Does It Hurt? Presidential Hurt In The Twentieth Century, by Dr. Myra Gutin, professor of communications, will be held on April 7. Dr Gutin will examine the health of presidents from Theodore Roosevelt through Bill Clinton. She will explore whether or not the public should know about the health of their presidents and if knowledge of medical problems would have impacted the election of Franklin Roosevelt, John Kennedy, or Lyndon Johnson. Applying this issue to today's society, Dr. Gutin will also discuss if presidents receive the ultimate in medical care available to them;

Hungry Ghosts: The American Lawyer as Writer, by Dr. James Castagnera, associate vice president for academic affairs and associate provost, will be presented on April 14. This lecture will detail how lawyer-writers are motivated to find audiences outside of their regular domain of the courtroom. Dr. Castagnera will discuss many famous lawyer-writers, including Daniel Webster, Clarence Darrow, Louis Auchincloss, and Scott Turow;

The Self and You -- Perfect Together, by Dr. Dominick Iorio, dean emeritus and professor of philosophy emeritus, will be delivered April 21. Exploring the parts of ones' self and ending with an encounter with individual personas, Dr. Iorio will take an extensive look at the way people look at themselves, and why many people find it necessary to improve themselves. This lecture will investigate the application of pseudo-selves to individual lives;

Musical Gems from Little-Known Composers, by Mark Miller, lecturer of classical music history and a pre-concert speaker for Princeton Pro Musica, will be held on April 28. Many people long to know from where melodies are derived. Miller will discuss the unknown and hardly recognizable composers that created the melodies many have come to know and love. This two-hour presentation will discuss the waltz "Over the Waves," and many other bits of beautiful music.
