March 31, 1999- ACCOUNTING TEAM GARNERS TOP SPOT IN WIDENER COMPETITION

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ -- Adding to an impressive list of national accolades earned by the accounting department in recent years, the Rider University accounting team took first place at the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants' (PICPA) Intercollegiate Accounting Competition held at Widener University on March 25.

Participating schools in the competition included Rider, Widener, and St. Joseph's University. Rider's contingent of four students consisted of (student's name with hometown, class year, and major):

The competition consisted of four rounds modeled after popular television game shows. In the first round, teams selected an accounting category and one student offered clues to teammates to help them attain seven concepts related to the category. The next two rounds were variations of Jeopardy, with categories including managerial, financial, auditing, not for profit, and pot luck. In the final round, teams wagered an amount of their accumulated points on answering a question from a mystery category.

The idea for the annual competition between the schools was devised five years ago by Dr. Dorothy McMullen, associate professor of accounting at Rider. "The idea was to make accounting fun by introducing games as a way to study and learn," she said. "It has taken off and become a way for accounting students from different schools to meet each other and engage in friendly competition."

In addition to accounting, Rider's College of Business Administration (CBA) offers undergraduate majors in actuarial science, advertising, business administration, computer information systems, finance, global business, human resource management, management and organizational behavior, and marketing. There are also Master of Business Administration and Master of Accountancy programs. Both the undergraduate and graduate programs in the CBA are accredited by AACSB International -- The International Association for Management Education. Rider is one of only four colleges in New Jersey and among 23 percent nationally to hold that distinction.
