March 3 - Rider to Offer CIS Minor for Non-Business Majors
A new computer information systems (CIS) minor has been approved for non-business majors beginning in Fall 2005.
“The CIS minor provides an interdisciplinary option for all Rider University students and is in accord with Rider’s aim to provide connected learning that bridges liberal arts and science knowledge and practical knowledge,” said Dr. Lauren Eder, chair of the Computer Information Systems Department.
Dr. Eder said the technological training that this new minor can provide will be valuable in many professions. “The effective use of information and knowledge has become an integral part of every profession. Most organizations today have at least Internet access, as well as other types of network access to digitally-enabled tools that have become necessary to do one’s job.”
As an example, she noted that in the communication field, journalists have important research needs where the use of information technology has become a regular necessity. An alternate platform for publishing is emerging as a standard as well. Similarly, the scientific professions have heightened research and analysis needs with many tools accessible only through digital interfaces. With increasing frequency music and art are being created, managed and stored digitally, and the CIS minor may provide a basic technical foundation. In addition, adult students in Continuing Studies will find that many courses in the minor will enhance their job skills.
The CIS minor is available to all non-business students at the Lawrenceville and Princeton campuses. Four courses (12 credits) are required. Introduction to Computing is one of the four courses and serves as the prerequisite for the minor. Additional prerequisites for selected courses are the same as they would be for CIS majors or double majors.
Advising begins March 21, and online registration later in the month. It is possible that current students can sign up for the CIS minor depending on the number of free electives they have available. For additional information, contact Dr. Eder at 609-895-5521 or eder@rider.edu.
