Jan. 20 - Warm Rider Welcome for Sanda Students

Twenty-three Sanda University students arrived on campus early Wednesday night in the midst of a cold, wet light snow to a warm Rider welcome.
As the Stout's charter bus pulled up to Switlik Residence Hall, a contingent of Rider student mentors, residence hall directors, student helpers and staff were there to greet the students and help them carry their luggage into the residence hall.
Then the travel-weary students, along with the three Sanda faculty members accompanying them for their year of study at Rider, were treated to a hot Chinese food buffet with the Rider students and staff in the Switlik lounge.
Much planning took place over the past two months to provide the warm welcome, arrange orientation sessions during the days preceding the start of the second semester, take the students on a shopping trip, and just help them get acclimated to their new environment. Each Sanda student also has a Rider student mentor.
"I began to communicate with my assigned student in early December. We exchanged emails four or five times," said Ashley Liberatore, a junior marketing major and one of the mentors on hand to greet the Sanda students. "She asked many questions such as what to bring, what the weather was like, what the campus was like. She asked about the Christmas holiday and explained her holidays. Hopefully, we'll be able to go into New York City or Philadelphia in the future."
Matthew Stevens, a junior finance and global business major, said he has also been emailing his assigned student regularly. They used MSN instant messaging. "That is a great way to communicate and easy to discuss what is expected. We talked about classes, grading, academics, and about Rider itself. Last semester Stevens studied abroad in Paris, and he understands the cultural adjustments the Sanda students will go through.
Another highlight was a welcome reception for the Sanda students and orientation committee with President Mordechai Rozanski at the President's house.
Dr. Susanna Monseau, assistant professor of business policy and environment, matched up Rider student mentors with Sanda students. "I am very impressed with our student mentors enthusiasm. They took the initiative in establishing a dialogue with their assigned Sanda students and answered their questions."
