McAuliffe-Gillespie Debate at Rider Kicks Off Campaign Season

Terry McAuliffe, immediate past chair of the Democratic National Committee and chair of the Hillary Clinton for President Committee, and Ed Gillespie, immediate past chair of the Republican National Committee, held a point-counterpoint debate at Rider University’s Bart Luedeke Center Theater on Thursday, April 19. The debated was sponsored by the Rider University Institute for New Jersey Politics, Campaigns & Elections magazine and the Hennessy Fund.  New Jersey is far more relevant in national politics because the state's presidential primary has been moved up to February 5, 2008.  This year there will be an enormous amount of early and intense campaigning in the state by Democratic and Republican presidential hopefuls. Dr. David Rebovich (far left), managing director of the institute, served as moderator of debate.  Gillespie (center,  left) and McAuliffe (center, right) are at the podiums.  Students panelists (from left to right) were: Jamie Papapetros, junior political science/communication double major and "Rider News" opinion editor; Ashley Sciarotta, senior political science major and member of Rider's award-winning Model United Nations Team, and Andrew Buher, senior political science major, 2006-07 Presidential Fellow in Washington, D.C, and Model UN team member. 


Menendez Calls for Changing Iraq War Direction


  As he has done throughout his campaign to win reelection to the United States Senate, New Jersey Senator Robert Menendez told a mostly student audience of Rider University students in The Yvonne Theater that the November 7, 2006 midterm elections are about changing the direction this country will go in.  "It starts with changing the direction of the Iraq War," he said.  "This is the key issue of this election."  He called for a plan that would transition troops out of Iraq over the next year.  He also said the election is about changing the direction of economy.  He cited a possible $12 trillion national deficit by 2011 as need for change.  In the left photo above, Dr. David Rebovich, managing director of the Rider University Institute for New Jersey Politics, introduces Sen. Rider Stages Holt-Sinagra Debate

   
Democratic incumbent Rush Holt and Republican challenger Joseph Sinagra squared off in a 12th Congressional District debate in Rider’s Bart Luedeke Center Theater.  The Rider University Institute for New Jersey Politics sponsored the debate.  In the top left photo, Dr. David Rebovich (far left), the Institute’s managing director, served as debate moderator, while Jamie Papapetros (center), opinion editor of The Rider News, and Robert Stern (right), reporter for The Times of Trenton served as panelists.  In the top right photo, Sinagra is left left and Holt on the right. More than 125 students, faculty, staff and community residents attended the noon-hour debate.


Tom Kean, Jr. Pledges to Fight Corruption

 
Tom Kean, Jr., Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate from New Jersey, spoke to 225 students, faculty and staff at Rider University's Bart Luedeke Center Theater.  Students from The College of New Jersey and Rutgers University also attended.  Kean assailed the state of corruption in the state. He vowed to make a difference and offered a three-point plan to curb corruption.  He also said horrendous mistakes have been made in Iraq and called for Secretary of State Donald Rumsfeld to resign.  The Rider University Institute for New Jersey Politics sponsored the program.


Menendez Calls Ports Deal ‘Mind-Boggling’ in Rider Speech

  

U.S. Senator Robert Menendez called the Bush Administration’s agreement to sell six ports to the United Arab Emirates “mind-boggling” in a major policy speech before 235 Rider University students, faculty and staff.  The Rider University Institute for New Jersey Politics sponsored the talk.  Menendez criticized the secrecy of the deal and called into question its security standards. During his speech, he also denounced the war in Iraq and addressed the state of education in the United States.  Following his speech, he answered students’ questions. Later he met with the many print and broadcast reporters to answer their questions.


Congressman Robert Andrews (D-1) Speaks on "The Future of Social Security"

New Jersey Congressman Robert Andrews (D-1) discusses the future of Social Security with more than 100 Rider political science and economics students during a Rider University Institute for New Jersey Politics program on February 28.  Rep. Andrews made his case for Social Security reform versus the Bush Administration's approach to reforming the system and held a lively question-and-answer session with the students. David Rebovich, managing director of the Institute, moderated the program.


Institute Hosts Holt-Spadea Debate

The Rider University Institute for New Jersey Politics held a debate between 12th Congressional District candidates, Republican challenger Bill Spadea (left) and Democratic incumbent Rush Holt (right), in the Bart Luedeke Center Theater. Dr. David Rebovich (left in photo of panelists), the Institute’s managing director, served as debate moderator, while Jennifer Potash of the Princeton Packet and Robert Stern of The Times of Trenton served as panelists. About 200 people students, faculty, staff, and community residents attended the noon-hour debate.


Panelists Advise Students How to Get Involved in the Election

Participating in a recent Rider University Institute for New Jersey Politics panel discussion are (from left) Kevin Hagan, CEO of the New Jersey Democratic state committee; Reed Gusciora, state assemblyman (D-15); Bill Baroni, state assemblyman (R-14); Brian Nelson, executive director of the Republican state committee; and Dr. David Rebovich, Institute managing director and panel moderator. The panelists discussed the 2004 campaigns and elections, the stakes for college students and how they could get involved. The program kicked the Institute's campus voter education and registration drive in cooperation Student Government Association voter signup efforts.


Baroni Talks about Getting Involved in Politics

Assemblyman Bill Baroni, of New Jersey's 14th legislative district, spoke to Rider University political science classes on "Connecting People to Politics," in the Sweigart Auditorium in the College of Business Administration building. Baroni, a first-term legislator from Hamilton Township in Mercer County, was the only Republican challenger to win a seat in last November's state legislative elections. He discussed his grassroots campaign, involving young people in politics, setting up a new district office, and influencing the legislative process.


U.S. Senator Jon S. Corzine Urges Students to Vote in Pivotal Election
February 20, 2004


U.S. Senator Jon Corzine spoke to 350 students, faculty and staff in a packed Luedeke Center Theater. Sen. Corzine called the 2004 presidential and congressional elections the most important since the 1968 election and said the United States was at “the tipping point of many fundamental issues.” He urged students to vote, stressing that “elections are really about the future.” He said Americans need to have “a national debate” on such issues as the doctrines of preemption and containment, the conduct of foreign policy, unilateralism vs. multilateralism, and budget and taxes. After his talk, he fielded questions from students for almost 30 minutes and then mingled among students answering more questions.

NJ Transportation Commissioner Discusses Fixing the DMV October 18, 2002

Jamie Fox, New Jersey Commissioner of Transportation, discussed state transportation policy and the need to revamp the Division of Motor Vehicles with public administration students as part of a Rider Institute for New Jersey Politics program held Oct. 18. Fox said a DMV reform commission will soon recommend that the DMV be returned to state control from private control. He also extolled the virtues of the E-Z Pass program and said a recommendation for high-speed E-Z pass will be forthcoming. In addition, he talked with students about the process of how policy becomes reality, as well as the lengthy process from transportation project proposal to completion.
