Sept. 29 - Noted Psychologist Opens Rider University Lecture Series

Dr. Hendrie Weisinger, an internationally known psychologist and New York Times bestselling author of Emotional Intelligence at Work, will open Rider University's 2004-2005 Lecture Series Thursday, October 14.

Dr. Weisinger's visit highlights the opening of Rider's new Center for the Development of Leadership Skills (CDLS). During the evening, students selected for the Center's Leadership program will be recognized.

Weisinger will speak on "The Emotionally Intelligent Leader," at 7 p.m. at the Bart Luedeke Center Theater. His talk is free and open to the public.

"We are thrilled to have Dr. Hendrie Weisinger here to kick off the new program," said Dr. Carol Watson, professor of management and human resources in Rider's College of Business Administration and director of the University's CDLS. "Emotional intelligence is emerging as one of the most important determinants of leadership and professional success. Developing the interpersonal skills that comprise this domain of intelligence has been and will continue to be the cornerstone of our leadership development effort here at Rider.

"His book is one of the best guides on how to develop emotional intelligence available. I have used it in my classes for several years and my students have found it to be invaluable."

Weisinger is known as a leading authority on emotional intelligence, an expert in anger management and the originator of the highly regarded techniques of "positive criticism." His talk will provide insights into how to manage relationships at work, at school, and at home with greater effectiveness through the intelligent use of emotions. He has practiced as a clinical psychologist and an organizational and educational consultant.

During the morning, Weisinger will conduct an anger management workshop for local school guidance counselors. From 3 to 4:30 p.m., he will present a second workshop, titled "The Power of Positive Criticism," in the Fireside Lounge. For the afternoon workshop, attendance will be limited to the first 100 responses due to space limitations. Those interested should contact the Human Resources department at ext. 7282 or via e-mail at cschaefer@rider.edu.

Weisinger's visit is sponsored by the CDLS and the Rider University Lecture Series. For more information, call (609) 896-5103.
