The four R's of sustainability are "reduce" "reuse" "refuse" and "recycle".

Reduce
A blog assembled by the librarians at Westminster's Talbot library helps patrons and the broader Rider community think more deeply about their paper and toner use and reflects on ways to cut down.

Signing up for the Million Monitor Drive cuts energy use by your computer without changing the way your computer works.

Share a ride! Rider has established a private ridesharing group on Erideshare.com that will help faculty, staff and students reduce their gas costs and their carbon footprint.  Who knows? You may meet someone new and make a lifelong friend!  Sign up for an account, and then log onto Rider's rideshare group.

The West Village residence development will be awarded LEED Silver status, meaning that the building will incur low energy costs in its building and operations, have low emissions of volatile organic compounds, and encourage sustainable living for its residents.

Reuse
Rider collects and redistributes used clothing through Planet Aid, and students in the Leadership Development Program sponsor a moveout day collection of furniture, appliances and food.

Refuse
Averting a climate crisis will inevitably involve changes to long-ingrained habits. But which habits are the most pressing to change? Understanding the fundamental economic, ecological and social dimensions of climate change is important for every 21st century citizen. To help students understand the critical nature of the climate crisis, and to help faculty integrate discussions of sustainability issues in their classroom, the library has developed a subject guide for use by everyone and a set of resources on curriculum development for faculty.

Recycle
Rider has established a recycling plan in conjunction with UNICCO, our housekeeping service and participated in Recyclemania in 2008 and 2009.  We held our first campus-wide Earth Day in Spring 2008 on both the Lawrenceville and Princeton Campuses and will be celebrating again on April 22, 2009.

To coordinate these efforts, we have a full-time Sustainability Coordination Manager, Melissa Greenberg (mailto:mross@rider.edu), who helps connect various units across campus to provide consistent support for the steering committee's initiatives
