Gender and Sexuality Studies Program Hosts GASSP! Colloquium
The Gender Studies Program at Rider University added sexuality to its mix last year, becoming the Gender and Sexuality Studies Program (GASSP). This year, to highlight its new name, the programs annual event is called the GASSP! Colloquium.
We wanted to make it more inclusive and to really reflect what the courses are about, explained Dr. Kelly Noonan, about the new GASSP name. Noonan is the director of Gender and Sexuality Studies and an associate professor of Economics at Rider.
This years colloquium will be held on Thursday, April 3 from 9:15 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Sweigart Hall, Room 115. The free event, which is open to public, will feature an awards ceremony, as well as student panel presentations.
The awards ceremony, held from 9:30 to 10 a.m., will recognize an outstanding student with the Dr. Virginia Cyrus scholarship. The Ziegler-Gee Award will be given to an administrator, staff member or faculty member who has worked to end gender discrimination.
Noonan said the colloquium promotes gender and equality, but also gives students a chance to present their work.
It allows students to present their scholarship and its important to come out to support those students, she said.
Throughout the day, there will be five sessions where students will present research papers, which they have written for various courses. The times of the sessions and their topics are:
10 11 a.m. Women and History: Changing Roles and Emerging Leaders
11:10 a.m. 12:10 p.m. Repression, Submission, and Power Plays: Class and Gender in Film and Literature
1:10 2:10 p.m. Representation and Reality: Law, Patriarchy, and Women in Film
2:20 3:20 p.m. Expressions of Gender and Sexuality in School and Music
3:30 5 p.m. Media, Literature and Feminist Identity
Lunch will also be served from 12:10 to 1:10 p.m. at the event. Fore more information, please contact Noonan at x5539 or knoonan@rider.edu.
