October 31, 2007 -- Rider to Host Kristallnacht Program
LAWRENCEVILLE -- The Julius and Dorothy Koppeman Holocaust/Genocide Resource Center at Rider University and the Rider University Campus Ministry will host its annual Kristallnacht program on Thursday, November 8, at 7:30 p.m. in Gill Chapel on the Lawrenceville campus. The commemoration will feature Sharim V’Sharot, the select Jewish Choir of Central New Jersey, conducted by Dr. Elayne Robinson Grossman, a noted scholar-in-residence of Judaic music.
Kristallnacht commemorates the night of November 9, 1938, when the Nazi SS incited mobs to attack Jewish citizens in Germany and Austria. Many see this event as the beginning of the Holocaust, according to Dr. Harvey R. Kornberg, director of the Center.
“Sponsoring remembrance programs is an important aspect of the Center’s programming,” said Kornberg. “Commemorating tragedies such as the Holocaust reminds us of the brutality humans are capable of committing. Bringing people of different traditions together can foster respect and understanding. We gather to remember and to commit ourselves to keeping Kristallnacht as well as similar types of tragedies from happening to others.
