Rider University Art Gallery will exhibit the work of noted Lawrenceville photographer Gary Saretzky in the exhibition, “Gary Saretzky: A Retrospective, 1972-2007” from November 1 through December 9.

An opening reception in honor of Saretzky will be held on Thursday, November 1, from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Gallery, located on the top floor of the Bart Luedeke Center on the Lawrenceville campus. On Thursday, November 8, Saretzky will give a public talk about the exhibition at 7 p.m. in the Gallery. All events are free and open to the public.

According to Harry I Naar, professor of fine arts and director of the Rider University Art Gallery, the retrospective exhibition will feature more than 100 photos that incorporate a variety of themes, including portraits, nature images known as photograms, abstractions and landscapes. “This is a very exciting show that reveals and explores an artist’s visual thinking,” said Naar. “As Saretzky has stated, ‘If the viewers take time to contemplate the work, they may take something with them that in some way enhances the understanding of their own lives.’”

Saretzky has exhibited regularly in solo and group shows since the acclaimed New Jersey Photographers exhibition at the Rutgers University Art Gallery (now the Zimmerle Art Museum) in 1974. Since 1988, his solo exhibits have included “Dreams of Italy” at the Trenton City Museum at Ellarslie, “Photograms of Nature” at the Monmouth County Library in Shrewsbury, and “Blues Musicians” at Dana Library, Rutgers University, Newark. Saretzky’s photographs are in the collections of the George Eastman House in Rochester, N.Y., the Mercer County Cultural and Heritage Commission, the Educational Testing Service, the Historical Society of Princeton and numerous other public and private collections.

Active in the local arts community, Saretzky served as director of public relations and later as chair of the Soviet Exchange Committee for the Trenton Artists Workshop Association (TAWA). Since 1977, he has taught photography and the history of photography at Mercer County Community College, and he lectures on photography through the Horizons Speakers Bureau of the New Jersey Council for the Humanities. Saretzky is profiled in Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Art, and The Macmillan Biographical Encyclopedia of Photographic Artists and Innovators.
