Philip Orr holds the Bachelor of Music degree summa cum lauda in Sacred Music and the Master of Music degree with distinction in Composition from Westminster Choir College of Rider University. Early training in piano, theory, oboe, and ensemble performance at The Neighborhood Music School in New Haven, CT, and jazz piano and theory with noted pianist/educator John Mehegan led to studies at the Manhattan School of Music, before becoming accompanist and sometime arranger for singers Vic Damone and Sandler & Young. The recipient of a New Jersey State Council for the Arts fellowship, Mr. Orr’s compositions integrate his eclectic experience of classical, jazz, pop, gospel and rock styles in works for chorus, symphonic band, and chamber ensembles. As a keyboardist, he performs jazz, musical theater and art music repertoire in solo, ensemble and partnering roles in the NY/Philadelphia metropolitan areas, and serves as organist/choir director at Calvary Baptist Church, Hopewell, NJ. Mr. Orr is on the faculties of the Lawrenceville School, Rider University, and Westminster Choir College, teaching piano, music history and music theory.
Philip was recipient of a 2000 Fellowship in Composition from the New Jersey State Council for the Arts. He is a member of the American Guild of Organists [http://www.agohq.org], American Choral Directors Association [http://www.acdaonline.org], ASCAP [http://www.ascap.com], and Pi Kappa Lambda. His compositions have been published by Hope, Transcontinental, and Orrganized Sound.
