Arts Administration

The Arts Administration major combines collegiate development of knowledge and talents within a chosen artistic discipline, an array of classroom courses introducing the legal and business aspects of managing artistic enterprises, and hands-on field experience in both on- and off-campus environments.  Our arts-intensive location near New York and Philadelphia provides us with unique opportunities for internships, job-shadowing and employment.

Faculty expertise from Westminster College of the Arts and the College of Business Administration combines into a program that nourishes artistic passion and provides extensive practical training and experience in managing organizations devoted to one or more arts disciplines.

There are three areas of emphasis students can choose in Arts Administration:

  • General Emphasis - features two tracks: Art Focus or Entrepreneurship Focus
  • Music Emphasis
  • Theater Emphasis

Arts Administration with a Music emphasis
Students must audition if they wish to pursue Arts Administration with an emphasis in Music.  Voice, Piano and Organ auditions follow the university’s general audition schedule; other instruments will audition by appointment.  Course work includes four semesters of applied music and four semesters of an ensemble.

Learning Resources and Special Opportunities

Arts Administration Lab
Arts Administration majors must meet the weekly attendance and participation requirements for Arts Administration lab during every semester of undergraduate enrollment except for the full time internship semester during the senior year.  The lab will enrich the degree program by bringing in guest lecturers, providing seminars on timely issues, reviewing management styles of local venues and exploring career options and alternatives.

Arts Administration Center
The Arts Administration Center is a keystone of the program.  The Arts Administration Center will involve undergraduate students and will concentrate on arts institutions and organizations, particularly in the not-for-profit sector.  All Arts Administration majors will schedule flexible time in the Center throughout their undergraduate careers.  They will work on administrative tasks for campus-based production of professional caliber and/or not-for-profit agencies.  The Center will also oversee the Arts Administration Speakers Bureau.

Rider University Creative Art Solutions Team (RUCAST)
RUCAST, the Arts Administration club, includes students from both campuses.  The club provides students with the opportunity to produce their work and build resumes.  All members volunteer a number of hours a semester on each other’s projects. RUCAST produces the annual Blatant Self Promotion Brunch, where arts agencies and industry professionals are invited to campus to network with students.  Guests range from government agencies like the Atlantic City Convention and Visitor’s Bureau to Actor’s Equity theater companies.

Arts Administration Portfolios
All Arts Administration majors will create and maintain portfolios that provide evidence of their class and professional work and their suitability for the internship experience.  Portfolios will be reviewed by the faulty three times and students must pass the portfolio review to continue in the major.  Portfolio requirements include: 20 hours per year for two years of non-credit volunteer work with arts organizations that are not in their discipline, documentation of service as a producer or assistant producer of university student events such as recitals, theatrical productions, art displays, and dance presentations, a current resume, and other items from class and Center related Activities.
