Why did you choose to attend Rider University?
I chose Rider because of Westminster Choir College. Westminster is one of the leading music schools in the nation, especially for undergraduate work. The faculty is world-renowned and very accessible. It’s a great place to learn to sing and make connections in the industry for your professional career.
What do you like most about Rider?
At Westminster, most of the classes I take are directly related to my major in some way. I feel like every class I take has relevance to my goals for the future. The student to teacher ratio is also very good, so every teacher knows me by name, even if I haven’t had a class with them. All of the faculty members are so willing to help outside of class, and I fell I can go to them anytime with questions regarding my development both scholastically and professionally.
I enjoy having such a small campus at Westminster. Every student is a familiar face and there is a real sense of community on the campus. Students are very supportive of each other and you can always find encouragement from your peers.
What was/is your favorite course? Voice Science
What professor at Rider has influenced you the most?
Dr. Scott McCoy, my voice teacher, has brought me so far vocally and has helped me find confidence is myself as a performer. I have learned so much from him not only as a voice teacher but also in his Voice Science class, which has helped me gain a greater understanding of how the body works as an instrument.
What has been your most memorable learning experience at Rider?
Getting to coach privately with JJ Penna this year has been incredibly beneficial for me. Mr. Penna is a genius and everything he says is so helpful and applicable to my singing and acting. He’s helped me with interpretation, diction, placement, melismas, phrasing … the list goes on. It’s really been a positive experience working with him.
What are your plans after Rider?
I would like to be a professional opera singer. I plan to stay in this area next year and keep studying with Dr. McCoy while applying to graduate schools for the following year. After graduate school, I will be auditioning for young artist programs.
More about Whitney: I enjoy playing piano, painting, skiing, going to movies, and being outdoors. I am a mezzo soprano and performed by first full opera role as Filotete in the opera Oreste by Handel this semester. My family moved from Georgia to north Idaho in Summer 2006. I have 3 younger brothers: one attends the University of Georgia as a freshman clarinet performance major and 2 that are twins and are in the 7th grade in Idaho. Before transferring to Westminster as a junior, I attended Columbus State University as a Voice Performance major in Columbus, Georgia.
